Indonesia sentences the leader of Jemaah Islamiyah to seven years in jail

At a Jakarta court hearing done via videoconference due to coronavirus pandemic, Wijayanto and deputy Budi Trikaryanto were sentenced to seven and six-and-a-half years in jail respectively.

Wijayanto was accused of preparing cadres to go to Syria as well as supporting them financially while on the mission.

Jemaah Islamiyah is a Southeast Asian Islamic group dedicated to the establishment of an Islamic state in Southeast Asia.

Jemaah Islamiyah was added to the UN Security Council Resolution 1267 as a terrorist group linked to Al-Qaeda or the Taliban over its alleged role in Bali bombing on 25 October 2002.

Jemaah Islamiyah is a transnational organization with members in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. (ILKHA)
