5 people killed by flash flooding in Abidjan, Ivory Coast
5 people have died and one is missing after flash flooding in Abidjan District, Ivory Coast.
More heavy rain is forecast over the next 2 days, the Government meteorological agency, SODEXAM, warned.
“During the period from 27 to 29 June 2020, the District of Abidjan will experience moderate or heavy rains. In view of the rains of the previous days, the VigilanceOrange remains,” it said.
Several roads were cut and houses damaged. Cars were dragged through streets and residents took refuge on roofs or clung to walls and trees.
Firefighters responded to several calls for assistance, mostly in the suburb of Cocody, which recorded 240,8 mm of rain in a period 24 to 25 June.
At least 36 people rescued or evacuated in several areas of the Abidjan district, the officials said. (ILKHA)
