Death toll in protests reaches to 556 in Iraq
Since the beginning of October 2019, 556 people have been killed in Iraqi protests, according to a report released by the Office of Ali Beyatlı, a member of Independent High Commission for Human Rights.
More than 20,000 thousand people were injured, the report added.
On the other hand, Amnesty International said that at least 600 people were killed in Iraqi protests.
The Iraqi protests started on 1 October 2019, a date that was set by civil activists on social media, spreading over the central and southern provinces of Iraq, to protest 16 years of corruption, unemployment and inefficient public services, before they escalated into calls to overthrow the administration. The Iraqi government has been accused of using bullets, snipers, hot water, hot pepper gas and tear gas against protesters.
On February 01, Iraqi President Barham Salih appointed Muhammed Allawi to replace caretaker Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who stepped down two month ago. (ILKHA)
