Rocket attack strikes US embassy in Baghdad
Katyusha rockets hit in the US embassy in the Iraqi capital late Sunday, damaging parts of the compound, the Iraqi military communications center said in a statement.
No casualties were reported but sirens went off in the Green Zone, which was the governmental center of the Coalition Provisional Authority during the occupation of Iraq after the American-led 2003 invasion and remains the center of the international presence in the city.
At least one person was injured in the US embassy, according to the local reports.
Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi confirmed that missile fell inside the US embassy compound.
Iranian general Qaseem Soleimani and the acting commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) - known as the Hash al-Shaabi - Abu Mahdi Al-Mohandes were targeted and assassinated by the US forces while they were separately leaving Baghdad airport in two cars on January 3.
On 8 January 2020, in response to the killing of General Qaseem Soleimani, Iran launched numerous ballistic missiles at the Ayn al-Asad airbase in al Anbar Governorate, Western Iraq, as well as another airbase in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, killing 80 American soldiers, raising the stakes in its confrontation with Washington amid fears of a wider war in the Middle East.
