House of Representatives approves a resolution to limit Donald Trump's war powers

The resolution compels the president to consult Congress before taking further military action against Iran. The legislation does not need to be ratified by Trump and is not legally binding.

The House voted 224 to 194, mostly along party lines, sending the war powers resolution to the Senate.

The fate of the legislation is uncertain in the Senate. Republicans have 53 of the chamber's 100 seats and scarcely vote against the president.

"Today, to honor our duty to keep the American people safe – that is our first responsibility: to protect and defend; we must keep the American people safe – the House will pass a War Powers Resolution to limit the President's military actions regarding Iran.  Congress is reasserting our long-established oversight responsibilities as we mandate that, if no further Congressional action is taken, the Administration's military hostilities with regard to Iran must end," Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the Floor of the House of Representatives in support of the resolution to limit the President’s military action regarding Iran.
