Hakan Atilla arrives at Istanbul airport

Former Halkbank executive Hakan Atilla, who was sentenced to 32 months in the US for violated Iran sanctions, has sent back to Turkey.

After finished his sentence at the FCI Schuylkill prison in the state of Pennsylvania, Atilla boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul on Tuesday night.

Atila's plane landed in Istanbul at 11:30 a.m. local time and was welcomed by the Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, as well as his family.

Atilla was taken into custody in New York City on March 27, 2017, and after 32 months in prison; he was released on July 19.

Along with Reza Sarraf, who was arrested on March 19, 2016, he was accused of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Reza Sarraf, accused of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran, was detained on March 16, 2016, in Miami, where allegedly he went on vacation.

However, later, Sarraf turned state's evidence against Turkey and entered the American witness protection program. (ILKHA)
