Two United Arab Emirates agents were taken into custody by Turkish police in Istanbul and sent to the court asked to be arrested.

Two United Arab Emirates intelligence officials were detained in Istanbul on charges of espionage according to Reuters.

Two non-UAE citizens admitted that they were working on behalf of the United Arab Emirates in their interrogations in Istanbul security directorate.

Following busy phone calls of the two agents in Ankara and Istanbul, which has taken attention of Turkish intelligence, the two agents were followed technically and physically.

It was noted that the agents had been monitored by the National Intelligence Agency and that they had met many people in Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul, and Diyarbakır during the follow-up.

One of the arrested agents had a telephone conversation with a suspect related to the investigation of Jamal Khashoggi.

On Monday, a joint operation by MIT [Turkish Intelligence Service] and Istanbul Police revealed that UAE agents had confessed in their interrogations according to the news in Haberturk.

The two agents, which still in custody and questioning by the police, have been trying to establish an agent network on behalf of Saudi Arabia, which lost its intelligence network in Turkiye after the Khashoggi murder.

Khashoggi was killed inside Saudi Arabia's Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, 2018, by a team of 15, consisting of Saudi officials who arrived in Turkiye for his murder and a cover-up team also in charge of dismembering Khashoggi's body.

Although two intelligence officers admitted they were working for the UAE, Turkish police have not received any requests from the UAE for agents since Monday.

This operation of MIT and Istanbul police also carries an important message regarding the blocking of possible meetings by foreign intelligence agencies in Istanbul. (ILKHA)
