Syrian child survives with the marrow transplant taken from his brother
A 5-year-old child of the Syrian family who fled their country because of the war, hold on to life with the marrow transplant taken from his older brother.
The family of Zekeriya Jawich, who fled Syria and resides in Gaziantep 6 month ago, learned that the youngest child Emel Jawich diagnosed with leukemia.
Little Emel's family then applied to the Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Centre, which is the first and only bone marrow transplant center in the South-eastern Anatolia region within the body of the Gaziantep University Oncology Hospital.
Initial examinations showed that it is difficult to control the disease with chemotherapy and the diagnosis of bone marrow transplantation is necessary. Therefore, the hospital decided marrow transplant taken from Khakd Jawich, the older brother, of Emel.
The first patient of the center, and the small Emel, who had been treated for about 6 months, was transplanted with marrow 2 months ago from his brother Khakd Jawich 17, after the treatment process continued for months.
Little Emel, who was under doctor's supervision for 50 days after the transplant, was discharged on Wednesday.
Father Zekeriya Jawich, who couldn't see her daughter for 50 days, burst into tears and hugged her.
A press conference was held at Oncology Hospital because of the discharge of Emel Jawich, the first patient to receive health after a bone marrow transplant.
Providing information about the disease and treatment process of little Emel, Prof. Dr. Sinan Akbayram, the unit responsible for Oncology hospital, said they discharged the first patient who performed a bone marrow transplant.
Speaking at the press conference, the rector of Gaziantep University, Prof. Ali Gür emphasized the importance of center for the region. (ILKHA)
