Imprisonment to historian Mustafa Armağan for "insulting Ataturk"

One of the leading historians of Turkiye, Deep History Journal Editor-in-Chief, and Researcher-Writer Mustafa Armağan was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months imprisonment for "insulting memory of Ataturk" due to his article in May 2017.

Mustafa Armağan, who was a pending trial, attended the trial in Bakırköy 2nd Criminal Court of with his attorneys.

Armağan, who made his final defense at the hearing, said that freedom of the press was guaranteed by the Constitution and that this article in the magazine was not under the scope of criticism. He explained that the article was based on a document dated 1926 and argued that since 1926 the article has not been countermanded.

Armağan stated that this letter was also included in a book published in 2007 and added that "No lawsuit has been filed against the book published in 2007. Following the publication of this book, some of the articles in this book were published in national newspapers such as Sabah and Yeni Şafak. The article in the magazine is the article of analysis."

Armağan stated that the article was not given a breaking style when evaluated in terms of information and offer an insight. He explained that the original title of the article in 1926 was reflected in the cover of the magazine.
