24 years has passed since the provocative events that took place after the arrival of Aziz Nesin to Sivas Madımak Hotel on July 2, 1993 who said that “The time of Qur'an is over, and announced that he will publish the book of Salman Rushdi “Satan Verses” in Aydınlık newspaper.

Upon these provocative statements, the people of Sivas gathered in front of the Madımak Hotel and protested against the provocative statements. Some provocateurs who participated in the mass of the people set fire Madımak Hotel aimed at the formation of polarization in society.

Aziz Nesin, uttering an anti-Islamic expression by feeding on Selman Rushdi, caused 35 people to lose their lives. Unlike the perception formed, especially by the left and Kemalist press, the devout and discreet Sivas people were not gathered in front of Madımak Hotel to react Hadji Bektash-i Veli, Pir Sultan Abdal or Alevis. They were never kind of a group to set the hotel in fire. There were no Alevi, leftists, artists and writers in anyone's target. The fact that such events occurred in Sivas, where Alevis and Sunnis developed mature relations with each other for many years, pointed to the darkness behind the event.

Everything started by taking decision to publish the book titled “Satanic verses” by Aziz Nesin who was making the enmity of Islam in Turkiye become an ideology, insulting Islam in all its writings.

In the book, where every kind of lies, slander, and such a disgusting were included, there were only insults, and when it was published, Muslim nations all over the world got up, the events lasted for days, and many Muslims lost their lives. Here, Aziz Nesin began publishing some of this insulting book on the Prophet Muhammad and his wives in the Aydınlık Newspaper.

Some groups that came out of the Friday prayer are crowded in front of the Sivas Governorate by shouting slogans. More than 10 demonstrators gathered in front of that Aziz Nesin and accompanying were came Madımak Hotel that they had begun to shout the slogan against Aziz Nesin.

Although the police fired at the air to disperse the demonstrators, it did not succeed. Meanwhile, some dark and provocative people burned the vehicles in front of the hotel and poured gasoline into the entrance of the hotel. The fire quickly sprang upstairs. The fire department could hardly reach the hotel because of the crowd. Those in there could not go out for fear of being lynched. (Osman İçli - ILKHA)
