The ceasefire aims to halt the devastating 15-month Israeli genocidal aggression in Gaza and facilitate prisoner exchanges.

A Victory for Resistance and Aspiration

“The ceasefire agreement is a result of the legendary steadfastness of our great Palestinian people and our valiant resistance in the Gaza Strip for over 15 months,” Hamas declared in a statement. The group described the deal as paving “the way towards the realization of our people’s aspirations for liberation and return.”

Hamas also extended its gratitude to mediators for their efforts in brokering the agreement, calling it a turning point in the conflict with Israel. The movement characterized the deal as a vital step towards achieving Palestinian goals of liberation and return.

Details of the Ceasefire Agreement

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, announced on Wednesday that the ceasefire agreement would take effect on Sunday, January 19. The deal includes a phased implementation plan over three stages:

1-First Phase (Six Weeks): Israeli forces will gradually withdraw from central Gaza, and Palestinians will be permitted to return to their homes in northern Gaza. During this phase, Hamas will release 33 Israeli captives, including female soldiers, civilians, children, and the elderly.

2-Second Phase: Talks beginning on the 16th day of the first phase will focus on the release of remaining captives and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

3-Third Phase: The return of deceased individuals and the commencement of reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Ongoing Violence in Gaza

Despite the announcement, Israeli military operations in Gaza continue. The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported on Wednesday that Israeli attacks since the start of the war have claimed the lives of at least 46,707 Palestinians, with 62 deaths occurring in the past 24 hours. The number of wounded has risen to at least 110,265.

A Step Towards Peace

Hamas stated that the agreement reflects its responsibility to protect the people of Gaza from further aggression and bloodshed. The group emphasized that the deal aims to end the massacres and devastation inflicted on the Gaza Strip during the conflict.

The ceasefire agreement highlights the role of international mediation in resolving the prolonged conflict. Reuters reported that the negotiations included provisions for reconstruction efforts, reflecting the need for humanitarian relief and rebuilding in Gaza after months of relentless Israeli aggression.

As the ceasefire takes effect, the international community will be closely watching its implementation and the potential for lasting peace in the region. (ILKHA)
