54 Palestinian prisoners killed in Israeli jails since October 2023
The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, along with the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), has reported an alarming situation regarding Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, highlighting the ongoing injustices faced by these individuals since October 7, 2023.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, these organizations revealed that 54 Palestinian prisoners have tragically lost their lives while in Israeli custody, with a significant number, 35, hailing from the Gaza Strip.
On the occasion of Palestinian Martyr’s Day, observed annually on January 7, the organizations called attention to the Israeli occupation authorities' alarming practices, accusing them of concealing the true extent of the deaths of detainees from Gaza. They stressed that 63 bodies of prisoners who died in custody are still being withheld by the Israeli authorities, including 52 who have died since the escalation of violence, demonstrating a further violation of human rights. Many detainees from Gaza remain unaccounted for, subjected to enforced disappearance without justice or acknowledgment.
The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the PPS emphasized the ongoing plight of Palestinian prisoners, revealing that a total of 291 known identities of detainees have been recorded as having died since 1967. Many of these deaths were due to severe mistreatment, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and action. (ILKHA)
