International flights resume from Damascus Airport after 13-year hiatus
International flights resumed from Damascus International Airport on Tuesday for the first time since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
A Syrian Airlines flight carrying 145 passengers departed for Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates at 11:45 am local time, marking a significant step towards the reintegration of Syria into the international air travel network.
This marks a significant development following the overthrow of the Assad regime by rebel forces last month. While domestic flights and humanitarian aid flights have been operating in recent weeks, this marks the resumption of regular international commercial air travel.
Qatar Airways, a major player in the region, announced its intention to resume flights to Damascus earlier this week, stating that it would operate three weekly flights to the Syrian capital starting January 7th. This move signifies a shift in Qatar's stance towards Syria, despite its previous opposition to the Assad regime.
Qatar was a vocal critic of the Assad regime during the Syrian civil war and had maintained a strong stance against re-establishing diplomatic ties. However, in recent months, Qatar has taken steps to re-engage with Syria, including the reopening of its embassy in Damascus.
The resumption of international flights from Damascus is expected to have a significant impact on Syria's economy and its reintegration into the international community. (ILKHA)
