Evacuations underway in northeastern Ethiopia after volcanic activity at Mount Dofen

The evacuations were prompted by steam eruptions observed since Thursday from the long-dormant volcano, heightening concerns about an imminent eruption. Authorities are working to move residents from areas at high risk to safer locations as a precautionary measure.

Mount Dofen, located in Ethiopia's remote northeastern region, has been dormant for centuries. However, the recent steam emissions have alarmed volcanologists and emergency response teams, who are closely monitoring the situation.

"We are seeing unusual geothermal activity, which could indicate a buildup of pressure beneath the surface," an official from Ethiopia's Geological Survey told reporters. "Our priority is the safety of the local population, and we are taking all necessary precautions."

Local authorities, in coordination with federal agencies, are organizing the evacuation of thousands of people from villages near the volcano. Emergency shelters are being set up, and resources such as food, water, and medical supplies are being dispatched to assist displaced families.

Community leaders have urged residents to cooperate with evacuation efforts and adhere to safety guidelines. "We understand the disruption this causes, but these measures are essential to protect lives," one official said.

A significant eruption could have far-reaching effects, including the destruction of homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure. Additionally, ashfall and gas emissions could pose health risks to both humans and livestock in the surrounding areas.

Experts have warned that volcanic activity could also disrupt regional weather patterns and air travel if the situation escalates.

Scientists are using satellite imagery, seismic data, and ground-based monitoring to assess Mount Dofen’s activity. While no definitive timeline for an eruption has been established, authorities are urging continued vigilance.

Ethiopia’s National Disaster Risk Management Commission has called for international assistance to support evacuation and preparedness efforts, emphasizing the need for urgent action to mitigate potential harm. (ILKHA)
