The visit, facilitated by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, included a meeting with Assad Hassan Al-Shibani, the Foreign Minister of Syria’s interim government.

During the discussions, Deputy Minister Rafiyev conveyed congratulatory messages from Azerbaijan’s leadership to Syria’s interim government. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s support for Syria’s journey towards stability and the welfare of its people. Stressing the importance of solidarity, he noted that Azerbaijan, in collaboration with Türkiye, stands by Syria in this critical phase of its history.

Azerbaijan expressed its willingness to assist in Syria’s reconstruction efforts, drawing from its own experience in restoring territories liberated from occupation. In addition to providing humanitarian aid, Azerbaijan pledged diplomatic support to bolster the efforts of Syria’s interim government.

Deputy Minister Rafiyev underscored the significance of sharing Azerbaijan’s expertise in reconstruction and emphasized the mutual benefits of strengthening bilateral ties. “Our shared experiences can pave the way for a brighter future for both nations,” he stated.

Foreign Minister Al-Shibani expressed gratitude towards Azerbaijan for its support and congratulated the Azerbaijani people on their liberation of territories from occupation. He described the event as a monumental step towards regional and global peace. Lauding President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership, Al-Shibani compared the rise of the Syrian people to power with Azerbaijan’s historic victory.

Minister Al-Shibani outlined the new Syrian government’s goals, emphasizing peace with neighboring countries, national unity through dialogue, and the restoration of Syria’s socio-economic and political standing. He acknowledged the challenges left by the previous regime, stating, “Our priority is to rebuild a united and prosperous Syria that engages positively with the international community.”

Both parties agreed to open a new chapter in Azerbaijan-Syria relations. Notably, plans for reopening Azerbaijan’s embassy in Damascus after a 12-year hiatus were discussed. This move symbolizes a significant step in reestablishing diplomatic ties and fostering cooperation.

To further strengthen these relations, Minister Al-Shibani accepted an invitation to visit Azerbaijan. He expressed optimism about the regular exchange of visits and collaboration, stating, “We look forward to seeing Azerbaijani representatives in Syria and to building a partnership that benefits both nations.”

The visit marks a turning point in Azerbaijan-Syria relations, signaling a commitment to mutual support, peace, and reconstruction in the region. (ILKHA)
