Snowstorms paralyze the Balkans, leaving tens of thousands without power
The Balkans are currently grappling with severe winter storms that have brought widespread disruption across the region.
Heavy snowfall has paralyzed transportation, cut off power to tens of thousands of homes, and forced the closure of schools and businesses.
Bosnia has been particularly hard hit, with northwestern and western regions experiencing the most significant impact. Over 200,000 homes have lost power, and many residents are also facing disruptions to heating and water services. Some towns are completely cut off from the outside world due to heavy snow accumulation, exceeding 80 centimeters in some areas.
In Croatia, strong winds and heavy snowfall have significantly impacted transportation. Coastal roads are experiencing stormy conditions, while inland areas like Gorski Kotar, Lika, and Slavonia are facing heavy snow. Authorities have imposed a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles.
Other countries in the Balkans, including Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, are also experiencing severe weather conditions. Travel warnings have been issued throughout the region, with authorities urging citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Emergency services are working tirelessly to clear roads and restore essential services. However, relief efforts are hampered by ongoing snowfall and challenging weather conditions.
Meteorologists are predicting a further deterioration of weather conditions in some areas, with stronger winds expected to return in the coming hours.
This severe weather event highlights the vulnerability of the region to winter storms and underscores the importance of preparedness and effective emergency response. (ILKHA)
