Severe weather to grip Türkiye through December 28

The Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued a series of warnings, forecasting a mix of heavy rainfall, snowfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds. These adverse conditions are likely to cause significant disruptions.

Orange alerts have been issued for heavy rainfall in Aydın, Isparta, İzmir, and Manisa provinces. Antalya and Muğla are also under orange alerts for severe thunderstorms, while heavy snowfall warnings are in effect for Antalya and Isparta. In addition, yellow alerts are in place across much of western and central Türkiye, cautioning residents about heavy snowfall, thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds.

The challenging weather conditions are set to persist on December 25. Orange thunderstorm warnings remain active for Antalya and Muğla, while Isparta faces continued orange alerts for heavy snowfall and rainfall. Yellow alerts for various severe weather conditions will continue across the rest of western and central regions of the country.

The impact of this severe weather is expected to be widespread and potentially hazardous. Low-lying areas near rivers, lakes, and urban zones with insufficient drainage systems may experience flooding. In regions with steep terrain, heavy rainfall could destabilize soil, leading to landslides, while the accumulation of snow may trigger avalanches in mountainous areas.

Travel is likely to be significantly affected, with roads, bridges, and rail networks potentially becoming impassable due to floodwaters or snow. Mountain passes and tunnels might be closed as a precaution, while traffic congestion and hazardous driving conditions are anticipated in urban and rural areas alike. Air travel and rail services could also face delays or cancellations due to the weather, with blockages on rail lines from flooding or snow a distinct possibility.

Authorities are urging residents to stay informed about local weather updates and to heed official guidance as conditions develop. Power outages are a possibility, given the intensity of the storms.

Even after the severe weather subsides, the aftermath could bring lingering challenges. Floodwaters may take time to recede, and debris clearance and infrastructure repairs could prolong disruptions. Residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared as Türkiye navigates this challenging period. (ILKHA)
