Cyclone Chido death toll rises to 94 in Mozambique
The death toll in Mozambique from Cyclone Chido has climbed to 94, according to the country’s disaster management agency.
The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique a week ago, leaving widespread devastation in its wake. On Thursday, Mozambique’s institute for natural disasters had reported the death toll at 73, but the latest figures reveal the growing human cost of the storm.
The Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, one of France’s poorest overseas territories, has suffered significant devastation from the cyclone. Local officials have confirmed 35 fatalities but fear the actual death toll could reach into the thousands due to the extensive damage caused by the storm.
Relief efforts are ongoing, but the scale of the disaster continues to overwhelm local resources. (ILKHA)
