32 killed in stampede in at Nigerian children's carnival
At least 32 children lost their lives and numerous others sustained injuries in a tragic stampede at a children's carnival held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when the private organizers of the event announced plans to distribute cash to 5,000 children, leading to a chaotic and uncontrolled rush to enter the high school venue in the Basorun area.
Oyo State's Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, attributed the devastating outcome to a lack of proper planning and coordination by the event organizers. He confirmed that the majority of the victims were children.
While a complete list of casualties is still being compiled, injured children were transported to various hospitals across Ibadan.
Commissioner Oyelade urged concerned parents to check these medical facilities with proper identification to locate their children.
The police have initiated an investigation into the tragic event. (ILKHA)
