Over 12,799 Palestinian students killed, 20,942 injured since October 7, 2023
The Ministry of Education has released grim statistics detailing the impact of the ongoing Israeli genocide on Palestinian education.
According to a recent statement, since the Israeli aggression began on October 7, 2023, a total of 12,799 students have been killed, and 20,942 have been injured across the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
In Gaza alone, the numbers are stark, with 12,681 students killed and 20,311 injured. The West Bank has seen 118 student deaths and 631 injuries, alongside the arrest of 538 students.
The violence has not spared educational staff either; 598 teachers and administrators have lost their lives, with 3,801 injured. Additionally, over 158 educators have been detained in the West Bank.
The infrastructure of education has also been severely compromised. The ministry reports that 425 government schools, universities, and other educational buildings, including 65 UNRWA facilities, have been bombed or vandalized in Gaza.
The continuous conflict has led to a dire educational situation where 788,000 students in Gaza are unable to attend school or university. These students are facing not only educational disruption but also psychological trauma and challenging health conditions due to the ongoing hostilities.
The Ministry of Education's statement underscores the profound human cost of the conflict, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention to protect educational rights and the lives of students and educators in the region. (ILKHA)
