Türkiye set to reopens embassy in Damascus after 12 years

Burhan Koroglu, appointed as the interim charge d'affaires, and his staff were dispatched to Syria earlier in the day.

The move comes shortly after Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan suggested that conditions were favorable for reopening diplomatic channels following the recent regime change in Syria.

Türkiye's embassy in Damascus was closed in March 2012 due to the escalating conflict in Syria. The reopening of the embassy signifies a shift in Türkiye's foreign policy, reflecting a desire to re-engage with Syria and address regional challenges.

While the duration of Koroglu's appointment remains unclear, his appointment as interim charge d'affaires underscores Türkiye's cautious approach to re-establishing diplomatic relations with Syria. (ILKHA)
