Japan to acquire MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones for maritime surveillance
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has selected General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.’s (GA-ASI) MQ-9B SeaGuardian to bolster its maritime surveillance capabilities.
Following successful trials conducted since May 2023, the JMSDF will integrate the long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) into its fleet. The SeaGuardian, known for its advanced capabilities, is designed to perform a range of missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
GA-ASI’s Optix+ software will be integrated into the SeaGuardian system, providing real-time analysis of sensor data and enabling operators to efficiently task and direct ISR missions. This advanced software will enhance the UAV’s ability to detect and track targets at sea.
The MQ-9B SeaGuardian, with its impressive endurance and payload capacity, is expected to significantly enhance the JMSDF’s maritime domain awareness and contribute to regional security. (ILKHA)
