Iran calls for inclusive government following Assad's toppling in Syria
The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday in response to the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, emphasizing that the future of Syria must be determined by its people.
The ministry called for national dialogue and the formation of an inclusive government representing all components of Syrian society.
The statement underscored the need for an immediate cessation of military conflicts and terrorist acts to pave the way for political reconciliation.
“Achieving this goal requires an immediate end to military conflicts, preventing terrorist acts, and initiating national dialogue with the participation of all parts of Syrian society to form an inclusive government that represents all Syrian people,” the statement read.
Iran reiterated its support for the international mechanisms outlined in UN Resolution 2254 and affirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the United Nations to facilitate a political process in Syria.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran supports international mechanisms based on UN Resolution 2254 in pursuit of the political process in Syria as in the past, and continues to engage constructively with the United Nations in this regard," the ministry stated.
Highlighting the historic friendship between Iran and Syria, the statement expressed optimism about the continuation of strong bilateral relations.
"Relations between the two nations of Iran and Syria are long-standing and have always been friendly, and it is expected that these relations will continue with the wise and far-sighted approach of the two countries, based on common interests and benefits, and in compliance with international legal obligations."
Iran reaffirmed its role in supporting stability and security in Syria and the broader region.
"Emphasizing Syria's position as an important and influential country in the West Asian region, the Islamic Republic of Iran will spare no effort to help establish security and stability in Syria, and to this end, it will continue its consultations with all influential parties, especially in the region."
The statement concluded by affirming that Iran is closely monitoring developments in Syria and the actions of key regional and international actors to adopt appropriate policies.
As Syria faces a critical juncture following Assad’s departure, Iran’s call for inclusive governance and regional cooperation highlights its strategic interest in ensuring a stable and unified Syrian state. (ILKHA)
