Russian Foreign Ministry confirms Assad’s departure, calls for peaceful transition
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has resigned from office and left the country, following negotiations with various parties involved in the Syrian conflict.
The ministry emphasized that Russia was not a participant in these discussions and called for restraint and political dialogue to resolve governance issues.
According to the ministry’s statement, Assad’s resignation and departure were the results of negotiations between him and key players in the Syrian conflict. The location of Assad remains unknown, and Russia has not disclosed any further details.
"Assad decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, giving instructions for a peaceful transfer of power," the ministry said.
Expressing concern over the unfolding events in Syria, Moscow urged all parties to prioritize political solutions and avoid violence.
"We urge all parties involved to refrain from the use of violence and to resolve all issues of governance through political means," the ministry stated, adding that Russia is maintaining contact with various groups of the Syrian opposition to facilitate stability.
Russia’s military bases in Syria have been placed on high alert in light of the developments. However, the ministry assured there is no immediate threat to their security at this time.
While Moscow refrained from commenting on the specifics of Assad’s departure or future plans, it reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace in Syria and supporting a smooth transition of power.
This announcement comes at a pivotal moment in Syria’s history, as the country seeks to navigate a peaceful and stable path forward after more than a decade of conflict. (ILKHA)
