Palestinian teen dies after settler shooting in east Jerusalem
A 17-year-old Palestinian teenager, Omar Shuweiki, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday following a shooting incident involving an armed Jewish settler in the Silwan district of east Jerusalem.
According to the Jerusalem governor’s office, Shuweiki was critically wounded on Tuesday when he was shot in the Ein al-Luza neighborhood of Silwan, located south of the Aqsa Mosque. Despite his grave condition, Israeli police reportedly detained him at the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing three gunshots before rushing to the site, where they identified the shooter as a settler guard. They claimed that police officers searched the injured teenager, covered him with a silver blanket, and then removed him from the area.
The governor’s office confirmed Shuweiki's death and criticized the handling of the incident, emphasizing the inhumane treatment he endured while in critical condition.
The incident has heightened tensions in the region, drawing condemnation from Palestinian authorities and human rights groups who view the killing as part of a pattern of violence against Palestinians in east Jerusalem.
Calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shuweiki's death have grown, as local and international organizations urge accountability and the protection of civilians under international law. (ILKHA)
