47 Palestinian prisoners die in Israeli custody since October: UN rights office
The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in Palestine has reported that at least 47 Palestinian prisoners have died while in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, OHCHR expressed alarm over the deaths, stating: "We are alarmed by the reports that 2 more Palestinians died in Israeli detention, aged 31 and 35, raising the reported number of Palestinians who died in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023, to at least 47."
The OHCHR highlighted grave concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. Reports have surfaced alleging widespread torture, denial of medical care, and instances of sexual violence against prisoners.
These reports have drawn condemnation from human rights advocates, who are urging international bodies to investigate the conditions in Israeli detention facilities. The reported abuses and rising death toll add to the growing scrutiny of Israel's handling of detainees amid ongoing tensions in the region.
No official response has yet been issued by Israeli authorities regarding the issue. (ILKHA)
