Deadly floods ravage southeast Asia
Severe flooding has inundated parts of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, resulting in widespread devastation and at least 19 fatalities.
In Thailand, over 640,000 households have been affected by the floods, with the worst-hit areas experiencing their heaviest rainfall in 50 years. Dramatic footage has emerged of people being rescued from flooded homes and evacuated to temporary shelters.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, nearly 139,000 people have been displaced, and at least seven deaths have been reported. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered his cabinet to remain on duty and respond to the crisis.
The frequent and severe flooding in the region is attributed to climate change and the increasing intensity of monsoon rains. Experts warn that such extreme weather events will become more common in the future.
In addition to the flooding in Thailand and Malaysia, Cyclone Fengal has caused significant damage in Sri Lanka and India, leading to at least 19 deaths. The Philippines has also been battered by six typhoons in November, resulting in widespread destruction. (ILKHA)
