Iraq's population surpasses 45 million: Census results
Iraq's population has exceeded 45 million, according to the preliminary results of a nationwide census announced by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani during a press conference on Monday.
“Iraq's total population has exceeded 45 million 407 thousand people,” al-Sudani said, noting that 70.3% of the population resides in urban areas, while 29.7% lives in rural regions.
This census, the first comprehensive survey since 1997, provides detailed insights into Iraq's demographic structure, including the Kurdistan Region.
The census data marks a pivotal step for Iraq, aiding in policy formulation, resource distribution, and development planning. The findings underscore Iraq’s youthful demographic, with over a third of the population under the age of 15, and highlight continued urbanization trends as most citizens now live in cities.
These results will serve as a vital tool for both federal and regional authorities in addressing infrastructure needs, enhancing public services, and crafting economic development initiatives. (ILKHA)
