Uruguayan President recognizes Yamandu Orsi as president-elect
Uruguay's President Luis Lacalle Pou on Sunday acknowledged opposition candidate Yamandú Orsi as the country’s president-elect following Orsi's victory in the second round of presidential elections.
Orsi, representing the left-wing Broad Front coalition, defeated Alvaro Delgado of the ruling National Party to secure the presidency for the 2025-2030 term.
Delgado also formally conceded and congratulated Orsi, emphasizing respect for the democratic process. Speaking in Montevideo alongside leaders of the governing coalition, Delgado said: "I want to send a big hug and greeting to Yamandú Orsi and the Broad Front. While we can congratulate the winner with sadness, we respect the sovereign decision above all things."
President Lacalle Pou echoed these sentiments in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that he had personally called Orsi to congratulate him on his victory.
This election marks a significant political shift in Uruguay, with Orsi and the Broad Front returning to power after a five-year hiatus. (ILKHA)
