The quake occurred at a depth of 51 kilometers (31.6 miles) and was centered approximately 123.2 kilometers (76.5 miles) from Kokopo, the nearest town.

The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Centre is currently assessing the situation to determine any potential damage or impact on the region.

Despite the earthquake's significant magnitude, no tsunami warnings were issued.

Papua New Guinea lies on the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire," a seismically active zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. While earthquakes are common in the area, they rarely cause widespread damage due to the sparse population. However, the region remains vulnerable to landslides triggered by such seismic events.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as assessments continue. (ILKHA)
