Pakistan's polio crisis worsens: 46 cases reported in 2024

The latest case was reported in the Qila Saifullah district of Balochistan, marking the second instance in the region this year.

The resurgence of the disease is alarming, especially considering that Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries worldwide where polio remains endemic. Despite years of intensive vaccination campaigns, the virus continues to spread, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates and poor healthcare infrastructure.

Experts attribute the persistent challenge to various factors, including misinformation about the polio vaccine and resistance to immunization efforts. The southwestern province of Balochistan has emerged as a hotspot for polio transmission, accounting for over half of the total cases reported this year.

The World Health Organization has emphasized the importance of vaccination as the most effective way to prevent polio. However, the ongoing conflict and security concerns in certain regions have hindered vaccination efforts, allowing the virus to thrive.

Pakistan's health authorities are working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. They are urging parents to vaccinate their children and cooperate with health workers to ensure the success of polio eradication initiatives. (ILKHA)
