Sudan's Burhan appoints new foreign minister amidst ongoing conflict

Ambassador Ali Youssef Ahmed al-Sharif has replaced Hussein Awad as the country's top diplomat. Sharif, a former diplomat, has been involved in various diplomatic roles and was a member of the Committee of Elders, a group that sought to resolve the political crisis following the 2021 coup.

The reshuffle also saw changes in the ministries of culture and information, religious affairs, and trade and supply.

This latest cabinet shake-up comes as Sudan continues to grapple with a devastating civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023. The conflict has led to widespread displacement, humanitarian crises, and international condemnation.

Burhan's 2021 military coup, which ousted the civilian-led transitional government, has further destabilized the country and drawn international criticism. The ongoing political and security turmoil has severely impacted Sudan's economy and its people. (ILKHA)
