Hindu festival turns hazardous: Fireworks explosion in Kerala injures many
A devastating fireworks accident at a Hindu temple in the southern Indian state of Kerala has left at least 154 people injured, eight of whom are in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Monday evening as a large crowd had gathered to watch the fireworks display. A powerful explosion, triggered by a spark igniting a nearby stockpile of fireworks, sent a massive fireball into the air, causing severe burns to many in the crowd.
Local authorities have confirmed that no permission had been granted for the fireworks display. The temple president and secretary have been arrested in connection with the incident.
This tragic event highlights a recurring issue in India, where religious gatherings often face serious safety concerns. In 2016, a similar fireworks accident at a Hindu temple resulted in the deaths of 112 people.
As India prepares for the upcoming Diwali festival, a major celebration involving extensive fireworks displays, concerns about safety and air pollution have been raised. While New Delhi has implemented a ban on firecrackers to combat air pollution, enforcement remains a challenge due to strong religious sentiments. (ILKHA)
