Israeli airstrike on UNRWA school in Gaza kills 22 civilians, injures dozens
At least 22 Palestinian civilians were killed and dozens more injured on Thursday evening when the Israeli occupation army bombed a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school sheltering displaced families in the Jabalia refugee camp, located in northern Gaza.
According to medical sources, the Israeli airstrike targeted the Abu Hussein School, which was being used as a shelter by families who had fled their homes due to ongoing bombardments. The attack occurred while the displaced families, including women and children, were gathered in classrooms for lunch.
The death toll is expected to rise, as medical officials report that dozens of others have been seriously injured. Several of the casualties were transported to Kamal Adwan and al-Awda hospitals in northern Gaza, but medical services in the region are already overwhelmed and suffering from severe shortages due to the Israeli siege.
Ambulance crews have been struggling to reach additional victims in the school, as the area remains under intense Israeli bombardment, further complicating rescue efforts.
The hospitals in northern Gaza, already stretched beyond capacity, are unable to provide adequate care for the growing number of wounded civilians. The Israeli blockade and relentless attacks have left the region's medical infrastructure debilitated, with many patients receiving minimal medical assistance in the face of ongoing violence.
The attack on the UNRWA-run school is the latest in a series of airstrikes on civilian infrastructure in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed and injured since Israeli genocidal war began. (ILKHA)
