United States: Evacuations ordered after chemical plant fire near Atlanta, Georgia

The fire began early in the morning at a BioLab-affiliated facility in Rockdale County due to a sprinkler malfunction that caused water to react with chemicals, sparking the blaze, according to Rockdale County Fire Rescue Chief Marian McDaniel.

“Once the sprinkler head activated, it mixed with that chemical, and from that, the wiring and things caused the fire,” McDaniel said during a press conference.

Although officials described the fire as small, the chemical reaction released substantial smoke, which was captured on television footage. Local authorities ordered evacuations for the surrounding area, while other residents were advised to shelter in place, close windows, and turn off air conditioners. Several roads in the area were also closed.

It remains unclear how many people were affected by the evacuation and shelter-in-place directives. The BioLab plant, located approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Atlanta, produces chemicals for pools and spas.

In a statement, BioLab confirmed that no injuries had been reported among its employees. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was notified of the incident, according to McDaniel. (ILKHA)
