According to the ministry, 1,223 cholera cases have been recorded, resulting in 48 deaths. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has severely disrupted the health system, leaving it overwhelmed and struggling to manage the rising number of epidemics, which have been worsened by the rainy season.

In its latest update, the ministry confirmed 128 new cholera cases, including eight deaths, in the states of Kassala and Gedaref. Heavy rains and floods have affected 440 areas across ten states, impacting 36,142 families, or approximately 156,995 people. The floods have led to the complete destruction of 16,188 homes, with an additional 14,099 homes partially damaged. Tragically, the floods have claimed 138 lives.

In the Northern state, a rapidly spreading bacterial skin infection, referred to as "bacterial dermatitis," has infected 260 people in the regions of Dongola, Al-Bargeeg, and Delgo. The health ministry reported that the disease, which causes skin rashes and can lead to fever and ulcers in severe cases, has emerged following the heavy rains and floods.

The ministry is currently working on developing preventive and treatment protocols to combat the epidemic.

Dr. Amina Osman, a consultant dermatologist, explained that bacterial dermatitis, also known as "impetigo," is a superficial bacterial skin infection that thrives in warm, humid environments, particularly where flies and mosquitoes are prevalent. She noted that the infection is more common among children due to their higher susceptibility to cuts, scratches, allergies, and eczema.

Dr. Osman advised affected individuals to clean the infected areas with iodine, saltwater, or soap and water, and to use topical ointments. She also emphasized the importance of nail trimming, personal hygiene, and mosquito and fly control to prevent the spread of the infection.

As Sudan faces multiple public health challenges, the ministry is urging international aid and support to address the worsening humanitarian crisis. (ILKHA)
