International organizations urge immediate ceasefire in Gaza for polio vaccination

In a joint statement, 20 prominent aid organizations, including Save The Children, ActionAid, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), and Oxfam, along with 20 medical professionals, emphasized the critical need for immediate vaccination efforts. They warned that the healthcare system in Gaza is on the verge of collapse, severely hampering the chances of vaccinating at least 50,000 children born during the current hostilities.

The statement also highlighted the disruption of regular vaccination schedules for older children due to the violence and displacement caused by the ongoing conflict. The organizations noted the re-emergence of the poliovirus in the region, linking it to the destruction of water and sanitation infrastructure and the Israeli government's restrictions on necessary repairs and supplies. "These conditions, along with overcrowding, displacement, and a crippled healthcare system, have created an environment ripe for the spread of the virus in Gaza," the statement warned.

The signatories urged that any ceasefire or pause facilitated by the United Nations should ensure full humanitarian access, not just for vaccines but for all essential aid needed to address the basic needs of the civilian population.

This call comes as international concern grows over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, with health experts warning of severe long-term consequences if immediate action is not taken. (ILKHA)
