Tunisian authorities sound alarm over rising rabies threat
Tunisian government searches for emergency solutions to curb rabies virus as 9 people have lost their lives since the beginning of 2024.
In a joint statement, Interior, Health and Agriculture ministries of the country confirmed the deaths and called for adherence to a series of preventive measures in the face of situation what they described as “critical.”
Kaouther Harabech, Coordinator of the National Anti-Rabies Program in Tunisia, stated that "the recorded number is unprecedented for Tunisia," noting that the recent deaths included a 19-year-old youth and two children aged 3 and 9.
Bashir Saidi, the health director of the Sidi Bou Said province, said that the situation has become critical after 889 cases of dog bites were detected within just six months. (ILKHA)
