Hamas rejects US claims of progress in Gaza ceasefire talks, calling them illusion
The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has dismissed US claims of progress in the Gaza ceasefire talks held in Doha, labeling them an "illusion."
The statement comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken heads to Tel Aviv for further discussions.
Over the past two days, mediators have suggested that negotiations in Doha were making headway, with US President Joe Biden expressing optimism on Friday, stating, “We are closer than we have ever been.” A senior Biden administration official echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the gaps between parties had been bridged and that a deal was close to being finalized.
Reports indicate that another summit could take place in Cairo later this week, with US officials aiming to finalize the long-sought ceasefire agreement by the week's end.
However, Hamas Politburo Member Sami Abu Zuhri refuted these claims, accusing the US of trying to impose its will on the negotiations. "To say that we are getting close to a deal is an illusion," Abu Zuhri told AFP on Saturday. "We are not facing a deal or real negotiations, but rather the imposing of American diktats," he added.
As Blinken embarks on his ninth visit to the Middle East since the Gaza genocide began on October 7, he is expected to meet with Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Meanwhile, Israeli negotiators are also scheduled for further talks in Cairo on Sunday, with working groups remaining active in Doha.
The developments highlight ongoing tensions and the complex nature of the negotiations as all parties seek a resolution to the Israeli genocide in Gaza. (ILKHA)
