US completes withdrawal from last base in Niger
The United States has completed the withdrawal of its military forces and assets from Niger, over a year after the country's military seized power.
The Pentagon confirmed the departure of troops from Air Base 201 in Agadez on Monday, marking the end of a decades-long US presence in the African nation.
The US had deployed approximately 200 soldiers to the base in northern Niger to support counterterrorism operations and train local forces. However, following the coup in March 2023, the new military leadership ordered the expulsion of foreign troops.
While the withdrawal is complete, the Pentagon indicated that some logistical operations will continue in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition. The US has commended the cooperation of the Nigerien military during the withdrawal process. (ILKHA)
