Romania batters drought as lakes dry up and crops fail

In southern Galati County, the lack of rain has caused the Talabasca lake to nearly dry up. Local residents have expressed alarm at the prolonged drought.

The drought has severely impacted Romania's agriculture, with significant losses expected in corn and sunflower crops. The country's agricultural minister has announced compensation for farmers affected by the crisis.

This latest drought follows a severe water crisis in July, during which residents across Romania faced water rationing due to prolonged drought and low rainfall. Villagers in at least six counties—Constanța, Alba, Dolj, Iași, Prahova, and Gorj—were given water rations to survive. Specialists noted that water consumption triples during hot periods, overwhelming the capacity of water tanks.

The drought has led to significant concerns among locals and officials alike. The prolonged dry conditions and extreme heat have strained water resources and damaged crops, raising fears of a worsening crisis if the weather does not improve. (ILKHA)
