US and UK urge citizens to evacuate Lebanon amid rising tensions

The US embassy in Lebanon has strongly advised its citizens to leave the country using “any ticket available” amidst ongoing flight suspensions and cancellations. The embassy’s statement underscored that despite the challenges in securing flights, commercial transportation options remain accessible.

“We encourage those who wish to depart Lebanon to book any ticket available to them, even if that flight does not depart immediately or does not follow their first-choice route,” the embassy said.

The warning reflects concerns that the situation could quickly worsen, impacting travel options and safety. The embassy's advisory is part of broader precautionary measures as tensions in the region continue to rise.

The UK government has also issued a critical warning for British nationals in Lebanon to evacuate “immediately.” Foreign Minister David Lammy emphasized the urgency of the situation, pointing to increased tensions and the potential for rapid escalation.

“Tensions are high, and the situation could deteriorate rapidly,” Lammy stated. “While we are working round the clock to strengthen our consular presence in Lebanon, my message to British nationals there is clear – leave now.”

To support this evacuation effort, the UK Foreign Office announced the deployment of additional resources to Lebanon, including border force personnel, consular officials, and military support.

The Royal Navy’s landing ships, RFA Cardigan Bay and HMS Duncan, are stationed in the eastern Mediterranean to assist with humanitarian needs. Additionally, the Royal Air Force has put transport helicopters on standby to facilitate evacuation efforts.

“The potential for exit routes out of Lebanon – including roads – being affected, limited, or closed due to events escalating with little warning, means that British nationals should act promptly,” the statement added.

Both the US and UK embassies have emphasized the importance of immediate action to ensure the safety of their citizens as regional tensions continue to escalate. (ILKHA)
