The Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security and Development (CSP) rebel group reported on Thursday that they inflicted heavy casualties on government forces during days of fierce fighting near the northern border town of Tinzaouaten. The rebels claimed to have killed 84 Russian Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers.

While the Malian government has acknowledged significant losses, it has not provided specific figures. Wagner, in a rare statement, confirmed heavy casualties but did not provide details.

Despite the apparent setback, Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Malian junta. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed Russia's intention to continue military and socioeconomic cooperation with Mali.

The clashes mark one of the heaviest losses for Wagner since its deployment to Mali two years ago to assist the government in its fight against Islamist insurgents. The Tuareg rebels, who have a history of conflict with the Malian government, deny collaborating with jihadist groups.

The situation in Mali remains volatile as the country grapples with a complex mix of insurgencies, ethnic tensions, and foreign intervention. (ILKHA)
