Palestinian official urges international intervention against crimes in Israeli jails
Qadura Fares, head of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission, has called on the international community to urgently intervene to halt the unprecedented crimes committed against Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails, which have persisted for about 10 months.
In light of a recent rape crime against a Palestinian detainee by a group of prison guards at the "Sde Teiman" Israeli detention camp, Fares has called for the exertion of severe pressure to curb and deter the occupying state. In a press statement issued today, Fares demanded the formation of an urgent UN investigation committee with a comprehensive and binding mandate to address the horrific crimes detainees face, particularly in the Sde Teiman camp.
Fares highlighted that this prison has become notorious for torture and rape crimes, representing the broader occupation system. He noted that many testimonies documented by specialized institutions include accounts of sexual assaults and other crimes in various prisons.
“The farce that the occupation military police came up with, and their detention of several soldiers aim to mislead the world public opinion,” Fares stated. He emphasized that investigating a single rape case while ignoring thousands of other crimes creates a misleading impression that Israel is a state of law.
“If it were a state of law, the military police should have arrested Israel's Minister of War, Yoav Gallant, and the extremist Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has been a symbol of incitement to kill and execute detainees over the past years,” Fares said.
He reiterated that Israel's crimes against detainees have reached unimaginable limits and constitute a facet of ongoing genocide. "Every day, as we witness the massacres against our people in Gaza, we hear horrific and harsh testimonies from legal teams and detainees who are released," Fares revealed.
Fares also renewed his call for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants against leaders of the occupation. He argued that the continued hesitation in implementing this falls within the green light given to Israel over decades to continue its crimes and erasure operations against the Palestinian people, which are now manifested in the form of genocide.
