Algeria condemns France’s recognition of Morocco’s Western Sahara plan

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad condemned the move and vowed to take necessary actions against the French government.

The Algerian government’s statement described the French recognition as based on "questionable political calculations, immoral presumptions, and legally incorrect interpretations." It argued that this decision undermines efforts to peacefully resolve the Western Sahara issue and instead perpetuates the stalemate that has surrounded Morocco’s autonomy plan for over seventeen years.

“It appears that former and current colonial powers know how to align, understand, and assist one another,” the statement noted, criticizing the perceived alignment between France and Morocco on this matter.

The statement emphasized the longstanding international consensus that the Western Sahara issue should be resolved as part of the decolonization process. It accused France of distorting and obfuscating the facts by supporting a "colonial reality."

The Algerian government asserted that France’s decision exacerbates the stagnation of the political process aimed at resolving the Western Sahara conflict and contributes to maintaining the colonial status quo in the region.

In conclusion, the statement declared: “The Algerian government will draw all necessary conclusions and consequences from this French decision and hold the French government solely and fully responsible for it.”

Last year, Algeria had criticized the recognition of Morocco's purported sovereignty over Western Sahara by the Israeli regime, stating that it “confirms the alliance of the occupiers.” (ILKHA)
