Landslides are common in southern Ethiopia during the rainy season, which typically runs from June to August. Heavy rains turn slopes treacherous, burying communities under mud and debris. These disasters not only claim lives but also destroy infrastructure and displace residents.
Deforestation exacerbates the problem, highlighting the need for reforestation and improved drainage systems. Early warning and stricter building codes offer hope for mitigating future tragedies. (ILKHA)
