A "wildfire of note" is designated as such when it poses a significant threat to public safety, communities, and critical infrastructure.

Evacuation orders have been issued for the communities of John D’Or, Fox Lake, and Garden River in northern Alberta. The affected areas cover close to 62,000 hectares and include approximately 5,000 residents.

There is currently no threat to oil sands production in the region.

Alberta is experiencing 158 wildfire events, with 55 classified as "out of control," indicating that these fires are expected to continue growing and that containment perimeters have not yet been established. Not all out-of-control wildfires necessitate evacuations.

“Fire activity is expected to remain intense throughout the weekend as the hot and dry weather continues,” stated the Alberta government’s wildfire service.

The province has deployed over 200 firefighters and support staff, 10 helicopters, and 43 pieces of heavy equipment to combat the fires. The wildfire service noted that the fire was caused by lightning.

The Alberta government continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities. (ILKHA)
