At least 22 dead after truck and bus collide in Bolivian Andes
A horrific head-on collision between a truck and a bus on a highway in the Bolivian Andes left at least 22 people dead and 16 injured on Saturday.
Bolivian police reported that the accident occurred on the route between Patacamaya, Bolivia, and Tambo Quemado, Chile. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but initial findings suggest the cargo truck, traveling from Chile, crossed into oncoming traffic while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
"This truck made a prohibited maneuver and as a result we have this unfortunate accident," said Nilo Torrico, director of the accident division of the La Paz traffic operational organization.
Fourteen of the deceased have been identified, with at least one confirmed Chilean citizen among the fatalities. The drivers of both vehicles were also reportedly killed in the crash.
Authorities are currently working to identify the remaining victims and notify their families. The investigation into the accident is ongoing. (ILKHA)
