Paul Kagame reelected with 99.18% in Rwandan presidential elections
Incumbent President Paul Kagame of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) has been overwhelmingly reelected with 99.18% of the vote in the presidential elections held on July 15, 2024.
The provisional results were announced on Thursday by National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairperson Oda Gasinzigwa.
In the elections, over 8.9 million voters participated, and Kagame secured a decisive victory, seeking his fourth term in office. His nearest competitor, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, received 0.50% of the votes, while independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana garnered 0.32%.
In addition to the presidential results, the RPF and its coalition allies achieved significant success in the parliamentary elections, securing 68.83% of the votes. Other notable results include the Liberal Party (PL) with 8.66%, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) with 8.62%, the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda with 4.56%, the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI) with 4.61%, and PS-Imberakuri with 4.51%. Independent candidate Janvier Nsengimana received 0.21% of the vote, failing to meet the 5% threshold required for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies.
Election observers from the East African Community, the African Union, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, and the Economic Community of Central African States praised Rwanda for its peaceful electoral environment and the meticulous management of the elections.
Over 100,000 Rwandans volunteered as polling staff, and more than 1,100 local and international observers were accredited for the elections, according to the NEC. (ILKHA)
