The incident occurred after the tanker's operating company reportedly violated Yemen's embargo on Israel.

According to maritime security organization UKMTO, the CHIOS LION was approached by an explosive-laden unmanned surface vehicle (USV) from its port side, causing damage and emitting white smoke. UKMTO provided initial details but did not issue further updates.

In the video published by YAF, a powerful explosion is seen resulting from the USV's detonation on the left side of the oil tanker. YAF blurred out details of the USV in the footage, concealing its specifications.

Yemen's military has recently showcased advancements in unmanned surface vehicle technology, unveiling the Toophan al-Mudammer USV. This new iteration is reported to carry a warhead significantly larger than its predecessors, traveling at speeds up to 45 knots (83 km/hr).

YAF engineers and operators continue to enhance anti-ship systems in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, gaining experience in modern naval warfare amidst heightened tensions.

The Yemeni military has targeted several vessels in recent months, including those affiliated with Israel, the UK, and the US, as part of its support for Palestinians amid ongoing conflict in Gaza. (ILKHA)
